Kopi Luwak — Cat Shit Coffee

August 13th, 2008 Posted in Personal News, Weird Stuff | 1 Comment »

I drank Kopi Luwak today. It is, hands down, the best coffee I’ve ever had. In case you don’t click links, what makes the Kopi Luwak special is that it was basically eaten and … passed … by a Asian Palm Civet cat (Paradoxus hermaphroditus.) A friend of mine from work bought it from Animalcoffee.com.

Problem is, now normal coffee tastes like shit. Pun intended.

iPhone Development: What I’ve Learned

August 13th, 2008 Posted in Technology | 4 Comments »

I just finished writing my first iPhone App, LifeTimer. It is still in review by Apple so it’s not up yet. I figured I’d write a little about what I learned.

  • Not all banks have “swift codes.” When I was filling out the form to accept payment from the Apple store it asked me for my bank’s swift code. After much searching I gave up and asked Apple if I could go on without it. They said no, they need it for international payments. Furthermore some banks (like Credit Unions) don’t have one at all. I had to open an account with a large multinational bank just to accept payment!
  • Test the hell out of your application. Long after I had it ready to submit to Apple I was finding problems with my app. Best thing to do is to run Instruments through it to make sure it isn’t leaky.
  • Writing the app is easy, posting it to Apple is a bitch! The steps required to prepare an app for publishing are staggering! Lots of certificates and stuff needed. Make sure you have the bundle identifier (com.companyname.appname) matching between the iTunes Connect page and your App’s project settings. Otherwise you’ll be scratching your head, because when it doesn’t work it also doesn’t tell you why!

Why music these days sucks

July 28th, 2008 Posted in Rants | No Comments »

Di and I were in the car the other day listening to the radio, flipping through stations. She came across this song that is apparently one of the hit country songs these days (iTunes says #89 of all genres at the moment) called “Our Song” by Taylor Swift.

No offense in advance to anyone reading this that might like that song. Music is totally a matter of opinion.

This song is the single dumbest thing I’ve heard this year. Allow me to post the lyrics for the portion of the song that really pisses me off:

Sneaking out late, tapping on his window
When we’re on the phone and he talks real slow
Cause it’s late and his mama don’t know

Talks real slow? Seriously, when you talk really slow can your mom not hear you? Were you hurting THAT HARD for a rhyme? How about low? Doesn’t that work better? I mean even that would be dumb, because you can talk in a low pitch and still be loud but “slow” is really REALLY reaching don’t you think?

This is why I don’t listen to the radio. Yes I’m a music snob, 100%. But if they put this shit on the radio (and don’t get me started about that crap that “Fergie” puts out about her humps) then I never want to listen to the radio ever again.

Get off my lawn!
