I just finished writing my first iPhone App, LifeTimer. It is still in review by Apple so it’s not up yet. I figured I’d write a little about what I learned.

Not all banks have “swift codes.” When I was filling out the form to accept payment from the Apple store it asked me for my bank’s swift code. After much searching I gave up and asked Apple if I could go on without it. They said no, they need it for international payments. Furthermore some banks (like Credit Unions) don’t have one at all. I had to open an account with a large multinational bank just to accept payment!

Test the hell out of your application. Long after I had it ready to submit to Apple I was finding problems with my app. Best thing to do is to run Instruments through it to make sure it isn’t leaky.

Writing the app is easy, posting it to Apple is a bitch! The steps required to prepare an app for publishing are staggering! Lots of certificates and stuff needed. Make sure you have the bundle identifier (com.companyname.appname) matching between the iTunes Connect page and your App’s project settings. Otherwise you’ll be scratching your head, because when it doesn’t work it also doesn’t tell you why!

After much hemming and hawing, I finally got myself an iPhone. Honestly I’m glad I waited as long as I did, as I’m not sure how pleased I would be without all the new Apps that are out on the App Store. None of which I have paid for, all of them that I got are free.

The keyboard takes a bit getting use to, but since it corrects your typing mistakes it is quite forgivable.

For those of you who also got one, a few apps to look at:

AOL Radio Think XM radio, without the monthly charge. They have tons of stations, and each time you listen to a song it tells you what the song is and even provides an iTunes link if one exists. Did I mention it’s free?

Pandora Radio It’s Pandora on your iPhone. Basically you enter a band you like and it gives you a bunch of bands it thinks you’d like. Seems simple enough, but the algorithm they use to determine the songs is very unique.

Aurora Feint It’s sort of like PopCap’s Collapse, only this one you can turn the iPhone and the playfield turns with you giving more strategy to the game. Plus it is loaded with RPG elements. Plus, it is free.

MixMeister Scratch Is just fun.

One of the most expensive monthly bills outside of our mortgage is our cable TV. We have a nice package, the digital + DVR package, including internet. No HBO, Cinemax, sports packages, HD… nothing too fancy. The DVR is something I couldn’t live without though.

One thing that we’ve been seriously considering lately is the Apple TV. I figure if I get an Apple TV and an eyeTV I could get rid of the standard/digital/DVR packages and save possibly a good $50 a month. In half a year the Apple TV/eyeTV would pay for itself, and I’d get to keep watching all the TV that is bad for me.

Of course, we have some luxuries that we would miss. The ability to record 2 things at once. The ability to watch some of the standard cable channels (The Food Network, USA, Discovery, … … … ok thats it for me) … but some of those shows you can buy over iTunes anyway.

We’ll keep the cable for now… but if they don’t do something about their extreme pricing soon they’re going to lose a customer.

Of course I could stop watching TV all together since it rots my brain… … … nah.

In other news, no baby yet.
