Why Windows is Really Expensive

November 19th, 2005 Posted in Rants, Technology

Sometimes I hear rumors that Symantec and Mcafee actually create viruses in order to keep themselves in business.  I think thats retarded, viruses are so easy to write that I doubt the companies would need to do it themselves.  However, the way Microsoft has their security set up, I believe there MUST have been some kind of talk between Microsoft and the virus scanning companies to ensure that they’d stay in business.  Because the key to protecting XP against viruses WITHOUT a scanner is RIGHT THERE in the operating system — Microsoft just doesn’t have it turned on by default.  Isn’t that kind of odd?  Sort of like buying a security system for your house then leaving it turned off with the doors open kinda odd.

I notice they do similar things with their software development tools.  They have certain controls (such as the DataGrid) that are extremely barebones and useless.  They recommend you buy third party controls which can cost several thousand dollars.  And if you look at Microsoft’s software, you can actually see the grid controls THEY use are feature-rich.  WTF?  Isn’t Microsoft suppose to be all "Developers, developers, developers!" Then how come their controls suck so much?

When it comes down to it, it really IS cheaper to own a Mac.
