Marketing at it’s best
September 18th, 2005 Posted in Rants, TechnologyI must add that Di was going to eventually get a Mac Mini but her Dell caused her so much grief yesterday morning that a trip to the Apple store was her only relief. Why are PCs slow as hell? Well, it’s actually 2 related issues.
When you run one or two programs on Windows it actually runs pretty well. But when you run more than that it slows down considerably. Microsoft thought they figured multitasking out back in Windows NT but the problem is they haven’t improved upon it since. In fact they don’t improve upon much of anything.
Whenever you so much look at a file in Windows, your virus scanner (and if you don’t have one on a Windows PC you got problems) goes wild to scan that file for viruses. That was fine a long time ago, when we didn’t have many viruses out there and the biggest a file got was 2 mb. Now the files are much bigger, the virus definition files are much bigger, and most of the virus programs (read that as Norton and McAffee) are bloated pieces of shit. Apply that with Microsoft’s borderline retarded multitasking scheme and you have one slow PC.
I’ve found the only time I have any sort of slow down on my Mac is when I’m working in a memory intensive program for a long time and then switch out to another program. Thats a good thing though, because I want my computer putting as much attention as possible into the program that I’m currently using. If I’m browsing the web, I don’t want Blender sitting in the background eating memory while I’m not doing anything with it. Right now I have 8 programs open (4 of those are extremely memory intensive) and its running like it only has one thing open. THATS why we are now a Mac Household.

I wish I was married to you, Dave. I would love a mate who buys me a new mac whenever I want.
